NewGround Partnership “Pays Off” for Brampton Church

When CrossPoint CRC completed a Community Opportunity Scan a few years back, they discovered three vulnerable people groups that seemed to be falling through the cracks in their city: youth, the poor and marginalized, and immigrants within their community. After much thought, prayer, and discussion, it was decided that a Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre would be a great way to reach out and walk alongside these vulnerable people in their community.

Crosspoint applied to NewGround to receive a Community Ministry Grant to help get the Debt Centre up and running. Since it began, the Centre has helped numerous clients begin the journey to financial freedom. In March, they had their first client finish paying off her debt! The head office for CAP rang the bells and blew their noise makers in celebration! Staff at the Centre treated the client and her mom to a takeout dinner – because of Covid-19 restrictions – but are looking forward to taking her out with her befrienders once the restrictions lift! (A ‘Befriender’ is a church volunteer who agrees to walk alongside a client and offer the support and encouragement of a good friend.)

This ministry has allowed the deacons and members of Crosspoint to cultivate relationships and care for people in Christ-centered and tangible ways, and to celebrate successes as they work together with clients in holistic ways.

One client of the Centre recently shared how impressed he was with how caring the church and CAP staff were “right from the first phone call. I’ve appreciated the food they helped us out with in the beginning and having them pray with me has been a great encouragement.”

Word continues to spread as residents and city organizations continue to contact them for help – help they would have been unable to provide without a NewGround partnership.

This ministry has allowed the deacons and members of Crosspoint to cultivate relationships and care for people in Christ-centered and tangible ways.
